The core principles of DMAIC, a problem-solving approach, are based on the Six Sigma methodology. Developed to help businesses flourish by evaluating present business methods and addressing the areas of inefficiency to bring forth profitable results. The approach is based on five principles: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. With the application of this method, businesses and organizations can work towards eliminating hindrances and working towards maximum efficiency and profitability. 


What is DMAIC?

In order to understand DMAIC which is a process designed to improve manufacturing procedures based on data and analytics. It is an integral part incorporated in the Six Sigma methodology designed to facilitate organizations with the required tools to improve the quality of their business  processes. 

The function of this practice is to identify the adversaries faced by an organization manufacturing process and eliminate such defects before there is loss of resources and product. After implementation, this problem solving strategy can help shape the way organizations and businesses approach a problem and further work to produce solutions. 

Describe the goal of each phase?

The problem solving approach consists of five crucial phases that make up the model applied by manufacturing companies to maximize their productivity and eliminate defects which disrupt the flow of the process. 

The robust structure of this strategy enables organizations to develop the practice of a thorough analysis to examine existing practices and eliminate weaknesses with effective solutions. 

DMAIC Define Phase: 

As stated by the name itself, the "Define" phase is used to describe the problems that require solutions and to develop an understanding of the goal of the project. 

Organizations often experience issues or recurring problems that are eliminated by solutions that do not align with the goal of the project. It is important for organizations or key decision-makers to clearly emphasize the objective of the project to develop effective solutions that do not miss out on the business requirements. 

DMAIC Measure Phase: 

Proceeding onto the "Measure" phase, the aim of organizations is to collect data, statistics to evaluate the current performance of the project or process. During this stage, organizations can identify the defects or hindrances they encounter that prevent them from reaching a certain goal. 

To ensure productivity, a certain measure is determined to maximize product manufacturing. However, if this baseline requirement is not met accordingly during the manufacturing process, project managers face a subsequent loss. Organizations can effectively move onto addressing key factors which impact the production and closely monitor the progress by analyzing the rate and performance of the progresses.

DMAIC Analyze Phase: 

The Analyze phase of DMAIC allows project managers to effectively identify problems in the production process that cause defects. It further focuses on the meticulous observation of the key features that impact the production value and absolving such defects with counteractive solutions. 

This phase is equipped with the necessary tools that help address the problems in the production process and determine if these issues are the underlying causes of product inefficiency. 

DMAIC Improve Phase: 

This phase of Six Sigma methodology involves the development of multiple variations to solutions which can bring forth maximum results. The objective of these variations is to develop different approaches to solving a problem with the least amount of consequential impacts to the subsiding processes. 


After the development of alternative solutions, the project manager's can test out which variation effectively counteracts the defects observed in the Analyze phase. Similarly, the solution should be aligned with the objectives identified in the Define and Measure phase. 

DMAIC Control Phase: 

In the final stage of the DMAIC process, the control phase emphasizes that organizations or businesses do not revert to their traditional ways and face recurring problems. Instead, the changes should be incorporated into the manufacturing procedures and work instructions, retraining the staff in accordance with the new procedures to ensure maximum productivity. 

What are the steps in Six Sigma?

The Six Sigma methodology is manufactured into the model of DMAIC, which businesses employ to improve their current processes and eliminate defects. The five phases of the model are as follows:

Define phase: Identification of the underlying root causes for the appearance of defects.

Measure phase: Assess the important aspects of the working manufacturing processes.

Analyze phase: Examine the existing data and look for defects in the manufacturing process.

Improve phase: Develop variations of improvement plans to maximize efficiency.

Control phase: Inspect the solution for errors and inconsistencies.
