5S is the Foundation of any Lean Program
WHAT IS 5S?
The 5S methodology is a systematic approach to workplace organization, aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the company.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF 5S?
The purpose of 5S is to make a workplace function better by making it an easier place to work. This occurs by making spaces make sense: tools and materials are placed in logical locations based on who needs them, how frequently they're needed, etc. Spaces are cleaned regularly. Cleaning and organization become habits. When used correctly, 5S ultimately makes processes safer and more efficient.
BENEFITS OF 5S
- Increased Productivity
- Increased Quality
- Increased Safety
- Decreased Waste
- Increased Morale
Five common inhibitors prevent success
- Lack of communication
- No commitment
- Absense of personal responsibility
- Insufficient management
- Not enough training
THE SYSTEMATIC STEPS OF 5S
- SORT
Eliminate all the items that are not needed for current production from the work place. Often done with "red tagging" and removal. - SET IN ORDER
Arrange the items used on a daily basis so they can be easily accessed and quickly stored. - SHINE
Remove all the dirt and grime. Clean daily to sustain. Ensure all equipment is running correctly. - STANDARDIZE
Create a system of tasks and proceures that will reinforce the steps of 5S on a daily basis. - SUSTAIN
Maintain the results of your efforts by developing a culture of 5S in the workplace. (Often considered the most difficult.) - BONUS: THERE IS A 6TH "S"...SAFETY
Safety is an ongoing practice that must be emphasized every day. Implement visual cues to keep workers informed and safe.
While it can be argued that safety is built into the various steps of 5S, having a focus on workplace safety in this methodology is beneficial and is referred to as 6S. 6S builds upon the 5S approach with the added step of safety. While safety is an ongoing process, it is supported in all five pillars of the 5S system.
HOW TO MEASURE 5S PERFORMANCE
- Define measurable goals
- Automate where possible
- Define measurement strategies
- Allow sufficient time for changes to realize full potential
- Measure the right things
