What are some Examples of Lean Manufacturing From Leading Companies?

Lean manufacturing is utilized by many leading companies across various industries to improve their efficiency and cut down on waste. By enhancing internal processes, this in turn provides a better service to customers and helps the brand grow. In this article, we discuss some examples of well known international brands who are successfully utilizing lean manufacturing principles.

Amazon

Continuing to maintain their position as industry leaders, Amazon is well known for their impressive innovation and fast shipping capabilities. Their focus on continuous improvement has helped to cut out unnecessary steps to streamline order processing. Amazon’s warehouse automation is a key example of how lean principles can utilize non-traditional methods to get ahead of the competition and continue to develop. Another example of lean utilization of their Kaizen events, gathering teams to identify areas for improvement within their processes, achieving better results through strong collaboration.

Nestlé

By integrating lean practices, Nestlé has successfully improved the efficiency of manufacturing operations without compromising on food safety and quality. Nestlé has achieved reduced lead times, cost savings, and improved efficiency by value stream mapping to eliminate waste, sourcing raw materials to use for their operations. They are also known in the industry for their total productive maintenance, reducing downtime by adopting a continuous improvement approach. By keeping all of their assets well maintained and maximizing production capabilities, downtime is reduced and product quality is consistent.

Toyota

Often being used as a prime example when discussing lean manufacturing, Toyota has an entire system dedicated to lean principles. The Toyota Production System utilizes continuous improvement, waste reduction, and just in time ordering to improve their overall manufacturing efficiency and lead the way to other automotive companies. They have implemented a pull system which reduces overproduction by only producing what is necessary for upcoming projects, cutting out waste and maximizing their production lines.

Intel

Being a leading example of how lean principles can be utilized in the semiconductor industry, Intel has managed to maintain continuous consistency across their manufacturing operations. By standardizing their processes, the same high-quality output is produced across their different locations on a global scale, maintaining their strong reputation on a worldwide scale. The ‘Copy Exactly!’ program replicates these exact processes into new manufacturing plants, allowing them to quickly perform to the same level as existing facilities.

Nike

One of the most well known strategies used by Nike is their Demand Flow Technology, allowing them to base their production off consumer demand. This method has resulted in significant cost savings as overproduction can be avoided and inventory levels can be managed, minimizing waste. Using lean principles to respond to ever changing customer demand is a powerful strategy which helps organizations measure their ongoing success and listen to the needs of their customer base.

Tesla

Helping them become a leader in the EV industry, lean manufacturing principles have helped establish advanced manufacturing processes and improve sustainability in the automotive world. Unlike many of their competitors, Tesla manufactures many of their components in-house to allow them to react quickly to any market developments and to give them full control over the quality.
